Abstract The mobile marketing industry is examined in a series of graphs and research results. Average mobile penetration in the first half of 2002 was 75% in Europe. Italy, Norway and Sweden had the highest while France, Germany and Finland had the smallest. The UK was in the middle - 48 million people, 80% of the population, are mobile subscribers, according to Netsizes’s SMS Guide. Forrester Research’s WholeView report, "SMS Marketing: still two years away from its peak," which surveyed 215 European marketers with an online survey, found that 47% of direct marketers use SMS for marketing and 24% plan to. Companies using SMS tend to be big users of interactive marketing generally, with 90% also using e-mail and 56% running viral campaigns. In Interactive Prospect Targeting’s last annual business-to-business survey in 2002 of 3,000 firms, 34% indicated that they would increase their SMS marketing spend this year.
